Strong Marriage Day 5 – Affirming Love Letters

By Emily Oak

writing love letters to spouseWords are more meaningful to some than others, but heartfelt words have a way of finding their target.  In marriage, like in all relationships, actions speak louder than words.  Still, there is certainly a place for affirming love letters filled with tender observations tangible enough for him to hold in his hands.

I typically have a hard time committing my thoughts to paper but when it comes to writing notes to David, the thoughts seem to flow.  Thank God because I swear, I can blow an hour trying to come up with something meaningful to say in a birthday card to a friend.  And forget a bereavement card.  It’s over.

Strong Marriage Challenge Day 5 – Writing Affirming Love Letters

Today’s action was to write a heartfelt card to each other.

This is what I wrote:

Babe,

It’s not possible for these pages to contain the beauty and meaning of the story we’ve written together.  A story that only you and I have read all the pages of.  A story that God himself scribed before time.  The trials we’ve faced, the mountains we’ve scaled, the valleys we’ve walked, the passion we’ve shared, the tears we’ve cried, the forgiveness we’ve given, the dreams we’ve dreamt, the risks we’ve taken.

We’ve done it together.  Hand in hand, back to back, heart to heart — together.

Thank you for giving yourself to me.  For not holding back.  For being brave enough to share your feelings, and never judging me for mine.  For being someone who takes responsibility and doesn’t blame others when things don’t go your way.  For having your eyes on me and no other.  Ever.

You are pure and you are kind, you are strong and you are wise but the thing I admire the most is that YOU NEVER GIVE UP.

You are always growing, always learning, always maturing.  You humble yourself when others rise up in pride, you steady yourself when others buckle under the pressure.  My fearless warrior.  That’s who you are.

You’re a man of depth and character.  Someone who challenges me and serves me.  Someone who lets me run and softens my fall.

I trust you with the most precious thing I have to give anyone — my heart.

I chose you and no other.  Forever.

-Em

I don’t take the opportunity near enough to let David know how much I adore and admire him through heartfelt notes  or long love letters — especially since his primary love language is Words of Affirmation.

This exercise was not only a blessing for him but a great reminder for me about the importance of slowing down.  Taking time to reflect on the reasons I fell in love with him in the first place as well as all the ways he’s grown since we’ve been together reminded me of just how crazy I am about him!

TAKE ACTION:  Carve out a little time today to let your spouse know how much you appreciate them by writing a sincere note.  If you have some special paper nearby, that’s a great touch, but if not, don’t let that hold you back — it’s the effort and message that matters most.
